Journey To A Private Art Museum

IMG_4777 _DSC8059

Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo

Private art museums play a crucial and indispensable role in today’s cultural landscape: They function as an environment for cultural studies, a knowledge pool and a center for art education, documenting the moment and accumulating art history while laying the ground for future preservation.

Between 1998 and 2002, the number of newly constructed art museums in China reaches its peak. Multiple private art museums have been built and inaugurated. During this great volumetric museum-building period, today’s Chinese cultural consciousness has gained profound courage and many new experiences.

Up to today numerous private museums are on the rise. Considering the last decades, many questions emerge, such as How has their mode of operating developed over the previous years? or Which effects has the present cultural context have on their visions and missions? These are just a few topics which will be discussed at the talk.

The art talk Journey To A Private Art Museum, initiated by YUAN Museum Preparatory Committee in cooperation with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Beijing Dealer, invited two special guests to share their exquisite experiences.

Mrs. Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, is not only one of Europe’s major art benefactors, but also the founder of an elaborate art foundation and art museum in Italy. She has devoted a great part of her time and passion to the activities in the museum, like the support of young artists as well as offering a dynamic culture education program.

Mrs. Shi Li-Sanderson, Executive Chairperson of YUAN Museum Preparatory Committee, combines her standard of skill, knowledge and foresight to plan and operate the future art museum. She has dedicated herself to the construction of a lively non-profit museum of Modern and Contemporary art.

The journey of building a private art museum is a challenging one, but on the way we come across various intriguing and fruitful encounters. This event is just the starting point of further interesting talks which will all be held in near future.

Introduction

Landscape stands today at the centre of the political, aesthetic and social discourse of our time. While nowadays everyone has a voice concerning landscape — journalists and politicians, architects and urban planners, sociologists etc. refer to it all the time — the most important figures working in the field of landscape, that is, the landscape architects and the garden designers, are still mostly unknown to the public.
The exhibition “the swiss touch in landscape architecture” intends to fill this gap and provide an insight into the extreme richness and variety of Swiss landscape architecture. In the context of “the swiss touch in landscape architecture” landscape architecture is not understood in a narrow and dogmatic way: besides landscape architects, the show also presents the relevant work of architects such as Bernard Tschumi or Herzog & de Meuron and that of engineers like Jürg Conzett.

Switzerland has a long history when it comes to landscape. Beginning in the 17th, and reaching its high in the 18th century, the alps draw a lot of attention. Many writers and scientist, painters and poets went there to experience the fresh air, the divine and the sublime atmosphere of the mountains. Wild nature becomes a subject of interest. Rousseau even describes it as “a real theater”, and travel guides are written about “the garden of Europe”. At that time, designed gardens imitated the wild landscape of Switzerland with its forests, waterfalls and torrents. With the industrialization, emerging tourism and developing infrastructure, it has always been a goal in Switzerland to preserve the nature in it’s entire beauty.
From the 20th Century onwards, landscape architecture has developed in many fields, such as architecture or urban planning. When we speak of landscape architecture nowadays, we mean the period from 1945 to our days.
Three values have always been present in Swiss landscape architecture: rigor, elegance and ecological consciousness. An other characteristic in Swiss landscape architecture is the struggle for the best formal solutions, no rapid solutions but the process of design is very important. The term “typically Swiss” often can mean a rigorous formal vocabulary, clean detailing, unconditional use of modern materials and a cutback in plant diversity.

Evolution: A Question

10

Evolution: A Question

As the first presentation of projects from the young generation of Chinese contemporary artists, Evolution: A Question combines installations, film and documentary works and paintings as the mediums used by Hu Yun, Guo Hongwei and Museum of Unknown. The diverse display is united by a common endeavour and set of concerns: the nature of art and its public display in the ever-changing culture of today.

Each work reflects the evolution of viewing and experiencing culture and art as a human activity. The Hu Yun Secret Garden: Reeves’s Pheasant deploys very contemporary means to comment on the complexities of history that surrounded the power to form such collections in the nineteenth century.

Through an exquisite series of watercolour paintings, Guo Hongwei also looks back to the means by which the natural world was classified beginning in the eighteenth century.

Museum of Unknown uses multiple mediums to present its research and multiple partners, each of whom are known for their individual contribution to a particular field of research.

This exhibition has been curated by Karen Smith.

About the artists

Shanghai-based Hu Yun looks back to an imperial age, during which colonizers played a particular role in mapping the natural world; contributing to collections which are today the core of natural history museums, like London’s Natural History Museum.

Using exemplary skill, with no single mistake permitted, Guo Hongwei defies the contemporary distaste for unadulterated beauty to achieve a poignant comment on the conventions of representation as well as of painting.

The Shanghai-based organization Museum of Unknown is a collective of artists who work together to explore the idea of “museum for today” in the immediate world and in light of its evolving socio-cultural values. This presentation includes contributions from Ou Ning, Xu Tan, Mao Chenyu, Liao Wenfeng, Li Mu and Li Yifan.

Yībān  Yu Youhan First Solo Exhibition in Beijing

Yuan Space is pleased to present an exhibition of carefully selected paintings of the great Chinese painter Yu Youhan. Under the title “ 一斑 yībān” the exhibition is dedicated to giving a large overview of Yu Youhan’s various work periods. Early and late abstract works, such as landscapes, his famous political pop paintings and very early expressionist paintings will be presented in Yu’s first solo exhibition in Beijing.、

Yu Youhan is mostly known for his big format abstract paintings and humorous political pop. This exhibition is not only showing some of Yu’s most famous works, but also offering a unique possibility to see his early works which are not easy to come across in publications. Yuan Space is proud to present these mostly small paintings on paper, which have never been exhibited before.

The title一斑 yībān can be understood as starting from a small point, but directing straight towards a bigger structure, perhaps towards a vast spiritual world. As the pronunciation of 一斑 is the same than 一般, common and mundane. Yu’s modest, indifference to fame and self-deprecating nature, characterizes him not only as a person, but also as an artist

Yu Youhan’s sophisticated paintings are heavily saturated with his own language of form. Tiny specks and marks run throughout his entire work.

Pierre Coulibeuf Enigma

3

Enigma

As a highlight of the 2013 Sino-French Culture Spring, the exhibition presents the artist’s exceptional videography to explore a humanistic search into the conflicting worlds of the internal and the external that captures a profound sense of “French melancholy”.

The four works on exhibit reveal Coulibeuf’s interpretations on the relationship between fiction and reality from various angles. The artist dexterously utilized the simulations and

transformation of the moving images to allow the viewers to be immersed in an atmosphere of self-introspection. Notably, the artworks have shown visual perfection -each image embodies an aesthetics and philosophical depth worthy of investigation.

In “Enigma”, the video pieces are accompanied by photographic editions which reveal the precision and the finesse of such an artist, who tries to be, with a raw, realistic, and poetic look, as close as possible to the image.

About the artist

Pierre Coulibeuf has been engaged with video art over the last two decades. Having directed more than 30 short and feature-length films, Coulibeuf’s works are adaptations of other genres of artistic expression, including, drawing, dance, performance, photography and literature. The artist has presented his work on many international film festivals, as well as presenting them as video installations (video-graphs) on exhibitions through the contemporary art network. His artworks are widely collected by various art museums today, and have become a critical vehicle in exploring contemporary European culture.

In his creative process, Coulibeuf is keen on adopting the virtual and distorted image to represent the relationship between fiction and reality. Among his works, the mirror, the white wall or the tangled bodily games allows the audience to be quickly immersed in an introspective atmosphere.

Bernard Faucon-True Fiction

2 5 6 7

Bernard Faucon True Fiction

YUAN Space is proud to present French photographer Bernard Faucon, pioneer of ‘Staging Photography’, with his first exhibition in Mainland China from 2 June to 15 September. This exhibition also marks the inauguration of YUAN Space itself. About 60 of Faucon’s works will be unveiled to the Chinese public for the first time. Myriam Kryger, confidant of the photographer, and Mr. Gu Zhen, renowned critic of photography, are the curators of this exhibition.

The exhibition covers Faucon’s four most significant series: Summer Camp, The probable evolution of time, and Golden rooms, allowing the viewer to perceive the unique visual tension created by his ‘fabricated fictions’ style. Subtler features, such as the delicate color, created by the unique way in which the film is developed, are also shown throughout the exhibition.

About the artist

In 1976, Bernard Faucon was a student of philosophy starting his creative path with a camera given by his grandmother. He bought used mannequins from the store, repaired them and staged a game scenario from his childhood memories.

After completing the series of photographs, Faucon disposed all of the props. In 1995, his foresight about the hegemony of digital technology in photography, pushed him to put an end to his career in conceptual photography, and turned to poetry and novel as media of expression of his inner world.

Andrew Wyeth in China

1

Andrew Wyeth in China

The Andrew Wyeth Retrospective (collection) from 14th,April to 12th, May will be the first exhibition presented by YUAN space. His works was chosen, because of his close relationship with the Chinese art scene.

In 1980s, the works of Andrew Wyeth, being one of the first well-know names in contemporary art, could already be seen on a variety of art publications. Different from the Soviet realists, his works demonstrate the self-consciousness, calmness and solitudes of an individual mind with a stroke of stability, tranquility and desolation. The unique style and quality in his works opened a door for the Chinese artists, who are just getting to see the world of art, and left influences in their un-established style and personalities. Through imitation and interpretation, they paid tribute to the master with their own works.

Unfortunately, Chinese gallery-goers haven’t got the opportunities to appreciate the oeuvre of Andrew Wyeth thoroughly in person. Only three of Wyeth’s works had ever been exhibited in China. This time, we selected 38 pieces of Wyeth’s works, which virtually demonstrates his different approaches and style of different creative periods, in hope that this exhibition will not only be a memorable visual experience but also initiate a retrospection of the original passions in Chinese art scene.
